Pismo Clam Field Research

  • Sliver Strand State Beach (map)

Sean Bignami, associate professor of biology and marine lab director, at Concordia University Irvine is conducting an early morning survey of Pismo clams at Silver Strand State Beach on Aug. 31 and is looking for 10 volunteers to help with transect surveys during the low tide period from 1:30am until 5:30am.

Three transects will be run from the upper beach to the water. Sand will be excavated using shovels, and placed into garden carts lined with ¼-inch wire mesh, then pulled to the water and sieved using buckets of water. All Pismo clams are identified, measured, and recorded.

The project has been supported by Emerald Keepers for the past two years. For more information, contact Sean Bignami at sean.bignami@cui.edu
