Emerald Keepers, Coronado Public Library, and the Coronado Cultural Arts Commission are proud to present the 2024 Coronado High School Chalk Walk: Creation Environmental Change Through the Power of Art. Don’t miss this fan-favorite event with gorgeous chalks by Coronado High School student artists on the walkways at the Coronado Public Library. Stop by the tents to learn more about environmental issues in Coronado and sustainable practices. Led by CHS art teacher, Laura Hill, the teams of artists will enlarge their designs in vivid colors. This year will be the largest chalk event since before the pandemic. We look forward to seeing you there! FREE.

MotorCars on MainStreet EV Section

Curious how EVs work? Talk to EV owners and check out a variety of models during the annual MotorCars on MainStreet.

DO YOU HAVE AN EV?

Emerald Keepers is looking for a few more people to display their EV at the EV exhibit located on Flora Avenue next to Star Park. You can park your car at the event for attendees to view, or you can stay with your car to talk to attendees about your EV experience. Emerald Keepers will provide coffee, snacks, and lunch for particpants.

Unlike the classic cars, there is no cost for an EV to participate in Motor Cars on Main Street. If you are interested in bringing your EV, please use the following link to register as a participant and input coupon code “EMERALDEV” at check out. Once the coupon code is accepted, the cost updates to $0.

2nd Annual EcoCamp for Kids

Emerald Keepers interns are hosting two day camps at the CHS garden. Designed for 1st-5th graders who love nature, gardening, the outdoors, or want to learn more about the planet. Kids will learn how to compost, garden, and why they should be sustainable with earth-themed crafts and games. Grades 1-3: 9-11am only; Grades 4-5: 1-3pm only. $25 per child. Free Paper Shredding and Electronic Waste Recycling

The City of Coronado and EDCO are sponsoring this event at the City Hall north parking lot, 1825 Strand Way. Items, such as old bank statements or other personal records, are limited to two bankers boxes or containers measuring no greater than 10 inches by 12 inches by 15 inches per household. Residents also may drop off unwanted electronics, including TVs, computer monitors, printers, fax machines, VCRs, DVD players and answering machines.

TO PARTICIPATE:

1) Know your King Tide time and date and arrive early as exact times are estimates. 2) Visit the shoreline on the coast, bay, or Delta, and notice your surroundings to ensure you are safe and are not disturbing any animals. 3) Make sure your phone's location services are turned on for your camera and then take your photo. The best photos show the water level next to landmarks such as cliffs, roads, buildings, bridge supports, sea walls, staircases, and piers. 4) Upload your photo! Our photo upload form includes instructions in both English and Spanish.

To upload photos via a web browser:

Be sure to have location services ON for your camera when you take your photo! This is the default setting, but you can check on an iPhone by going to Settings > Privacy > Location Services > Camera. For Android, go to Settings > Location. If using a camera without location services, carefully make a note of where you took your photos so you can mark that location on a map when you upload them.

Either at your photo location or later, go to the King Tides Photo Upload form and select "Open in browser".

Upload your King Tides photo and complete the form. Repeat for additional photos. Your phone's Location Services will allow us to confirm the location of your photo, but you will also be able to mark the location of your photo on a map.

Delta Beach CleanUp in Partnership with Naval Base Coronado

It’s time for the fall Delta Beach cleanup with the Navy. Meet in Fiddler’s Cove / Navy Yacht Club outer parking lot OR at the gate just south of the Amphibious Base on the Strand. There will be an Emerald Keepers sign on the fence beside a large dumpster just south of the Amphibious Base. You may park inside the gate. Please bring a water bottle, a picker and bucket if you have one Wear sunscreen, a hat and gloves. Let’s clean one of Coronado’s dirtiest beaches along the bay. See you there!

Pismo Clam Field Research

Sean Bignami, associate professor of biology and marine lab director, at Concordia University Irvine is conducting an early morning survey of Pismo clams at Silver Strand State Beach on Aug. 31 and is looking for 10 volunteers to help with transect surveys during the low tide period from 1:30am until 5:30am. 

Three transects will be run from the upper beach to the water. Sand will be excavated using shovels, and placed into garden carts lined with ¼-inch wire mesh, then pulled to the water and sieved using buckets of water. All Pismo clams are identified, measured, and recorded.

CMS & CHS Gardening Opportunities - JUL 8 & 22, AUG 5 & 19

CMS Garden is on the Coronado Middle School Campus. Enter through the F Avenue Gate.

CHS Garden is located between the high school stadium and Village Elementary School.

Middle school and high school student, are invited to grow food and compost organics at your school garden. Harvested food is donated to the IB Food Pantry in partnership with the Coronado Rotary Club. Environmental Librarian and Emerald Keepers Board Member, Tara Davies, is a master composter and the garden leader. If you are looking for a fun and rewarding activity, stop by and give it a try! Parent & ME Earth Day Cooking 0 Vegetable Dishes from the Earth

The days of consuming overflowing non-compostable plates of pasta and donuts are over. The theme is Keep Our Sea Plastic-Free. Come see the beautiful chalks by Coronado High School student artists, visit eco-booths, and watch a short film about plastics in the Winn Room. Earth Month Camp for Kids, April 15, 22 & 29

Emerald Keepers and their high school interns are pleased to announce the first annual Earth Month Camp for elementary students ages 6 – 11. Grow your child’s love for the environment as they learn to compost, grow and maintain a garden, make new friends, and enjoy Earth-themed games and crafts.
