In partnership with the Coronado Floral Association, Emerald Keepers awarded a green ribbon to 255 Earth Friendly home fronts in the Village and Cays in 2023. Earth Friendly home fronts are designed and maintained to beautify homes and benefit nature by conserving water, promoting biodiversity, and nurturing the soil.

GREEN RIBBON GUIDELINES
Emerald Keepers volunteers judge home fronts based on the following Earth Friendly standards:

  • MHome fronts, including the strip between the sidewalk and the street, should be judged on the following criteria:

    » Limited to no lawn. Must be less than 25% of the home front area.

    » Limited to no artificial grass. Must be very limited – less than 10% of home front area.

    » Majority native or low water plants. Majority of plants must be in the ground (vs. pots)

    No artificial plants or flowers (wreaths are ok). Water-intensive plants to look out for are azalea, hydrangea, cala lilies, and bamboo.

    » Natural mulch covering soil. Bark, rocks, sand, decomposed granite, etc. provide ground cover to minimize weeds and retain water.

    » Majority ground surface non paved to allow for water absorption. No solid concrete

    Some patio acceptable if permeable space between pavers.

    » Good level of design and maintenance. No visible toys, hoses, or trash cans. Home and fencing must be maintained.

    » Obvious effort. Minimal weeds or overgrowth.

    » Curb appeal
