PROCLAMATON

 WHEREAS, Coronado, a coastal beach community, understands the need for sustainable practices to ensure the health of our oceans and citizenry; and

WHEREAS, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, scientists believe 4.8 to 12.7 million metric tons of plastic enter the ocean every year -- the weight of nearly 90 aircraft carriers; and

WHEREAS,increasing awareness of how and why we consume single-use items; voluntarily reducing consumption of disposable and single-use items such as plastics and papers; and increasing reuse and recycling, the community of Coronado – over 24,000 citizens strong—can contribute significantly to the health of our oceans and lands; and

WHEREAS, it is a goal of this community to care for our emerald city and ocean blue waters; and

WHEREAS, the city, its citizens, and businesses can all do their part to care forCoronado, our oceans, and the planet; and 

WHEREAS,by the city, business, and citizens voluntarily eliminating single-use plastics and papers, Coronadans will enjoy cleaner beaches, educate consumers, and ensure an Emerald Green, Ocean Bluecommunity; and 

WHEREAS, in a community as beautiful and unique as Coronado, our voices and actions must seek to ensure a sustainable future for our children and children’s children; 

Now, Therefore, I, RICHARD BAILEY, by the authority vested in me as the Fifty-first Mayor of the City of Coronado, together with the entire Coronado City Council, do hereby proclaim the month of June as 

“Emerald Green, Ocean Blue” 

Month in the City of Coronado and encourage all citizens to become true stewards of our Emerald Green, Ocean Blue village. With this proclamation we ask Citizens of Coronado to commit to sustainable practices and join together in an annual celebration commencing in 2020 – the year of perfect vision–– to commemorate Coronado’s environmental stewardship. 

In Witness Thereof, I Have Hereunto Set My Hand and caused the Seal of the City of Coronado, California, to be affixed thereto this 4th day of June 2019.
