Coronado Celebrates!

Plastic-Free Earth Month

April is Earth Month and what better way to celebrate than to eliminate single-use plastics. Single-use plastics are items such as straws, store-bought water bottles and take-out utensils – all used once and then thrown-away.

Only 9% of all plastic ever created has been recycled, and much of it ends up in landfills or in the ocean. An estimated 33 billion pounds of plastic gets dumped into the ocean each year. The damage is staggering. Plastic trash is found in 90% of seabirds, entangles sea life, and breaks down into micro-plastic that has been detected in every net tow and on every beach around the world.

Exposure to plastic is linked to cancer, birth defects, and other ailments. We haven’t begun to understand the full ramifications of plastic. It is in the air we breathe and even in our blood.
